Prehospital Pediatric Agitation: Management by the EMS Clinician

The goal of this activity is to improve EMS clinicians' ability to recognize, assess, and safely manage agitation in pediatric patients using an evidence-based, patient-centered approach in the prehospital setting. By increasing knowledge and confidence in the assessment and treatment of pediatric agitation, learners will be better equipped to provide timely, safe, and effective care that minimizes harm to the patient, family, and EMS personnel while improving patient outcomes.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify clinical features and common causes of pediatric agitation in the prehospital setting.
  2. Explain least restrictive means of intervention including non-pharmacological interventions.
  3. Determine treatment options including scene safety, medical direction, medication, and destination decisions for pediatric agitation.
