This Disaster Response Collaborative Fireside Chat will provide an informal forum for children’s hospital representatives and other interested individuals to engage with experts on recognizing and responding to mental and behavioral health symptoms in children during and after a disaster. Discussion will include practical strategies for integrating mental health considerations into disaster plans and strengthening the role of children’s hospitals as advocates for pediatric needs in broader disaster management efforts.
Objectives:
- Discuss recognition of PTSD and related symptoms in children based on proximity to a trauma event.
- Identify strategies for managing PTSD and other mental/behavioral health concerns in children.
- Describe approaches for talking with children about loss and grief.
- Explain why PTSD and related symptoms remain an ongoing concern throughout the recovery phase following a disaster.
