Sean Mathis, MSN, CPNP-AC/PC, RN, CPN

I’m a pediatric Nurse Practitioner and healthcare leader with experience spanning high-acuity emergency care, infection prevention, and clinical informatics. I began my career as a pediatric nurse across multiple inpatient units and specialties, building a strong foundation in complex pediatric care and frontline clinical operations. I currently practice as a Nurse Practitioner in the Emergency Department at Children’s National Hospital, where I provide high-acuity pediatric emergency care in a fast-paced, high-stakes environment. I was selected to serve as Interim Co-Lead APP for the Emergency Department, supporting leadership of the NP and PA workforce and helping guide clinical operations during a period of transition. Working at the bedside continues to ground my perspective and informs my approach to systems design, education, and safety. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I worked on the front lines as a COVID nurse, navigating rapidly evolving clinical guidance, PPE constraints, and operational uncertainty. That experience shaped my professional focus on infection prevention, workforce safety, and the systems required to protect healthcare workers during periods of crisis and rapid change. In 2024, I joined the CHiRP (Children’s High Risk Pathogen) Team, a multidisciplinary program focused on preparedness for high-consequence infectious diseases such as Ebola and Marburg virus disease, as the Clinical Programs & Informatics Lead. In this role, I lead strategic educational initiatives and oversee key components of the program’s informatics and IT infrastructure. My work focuses on translating evidence into practice, strengthening clinical and technical systems, and advancing healthcare safety, preparedness, and resilience. I’m particularly motivated by work at the intersection of clinical care, education, and informatics—where strong systems and clear guidance can meaningfully improve outcomes for both patients and healthcare workers.
