Mark Batshaw, Professor of Pediatrics, George Washington University

Dr. Batshaw received his M.D. from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, completed a residency in Pediatrics at the Hospital for Sick Children, University of Toronto and a clinical fellowship in Neurodevelopmental Pediatrics at Johns Hopkins. He previously served on the faculty of John Hopkins and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia/University of Pennsylvania. From 1998 to 2021 Dr. Batshaw served as Chief Academic Officer and Director of the Children’s National Research Institute at Children’s National Hospital where he was also Physician-in-Chief from 2015-2021. He was chairman of Pediatrics at the George Washington University School of Medicine between 1998-2015 and was Associate Dean for Academic Affairs there until 2017. He is currently Distinguished Investigator in the Center for Genetic Medicine Research at Children’s National. Dr. Batshaw has spent his entire career in the care of children with developmental disabilities. He has published over 200 articles and the classic textbook Children with Disabilities, now in its 8th edition. Dr. Batshaw's research has focused on inborn errors of urea synthesis, a field where he is considered an international authority. He has been continuously funded as a PI by the NIH for over 45 years including being director of the Rare Diseases Clinical Research Center on Urea Cycle Disorders. He is co-inventor of alternate pathway therapies for these disorders.
