This fireside chat addresses critical gaps in disaster preparedness for children and youth with special health care needs (CYSHCN) and children with medical complexity (CMC). Participants will engage with diverse experts and families with lived experiences to explore comprehensive emergency planning strategies for CYSHCN and CMC.
Objectives:
- Analyze the unique vulnerabilities and specific medical needs of CYSHCN/CMC populations that necessitate specialized consideration in comprehensive disaster preparedness planning
- Compare and contrast disaster impact scenarios across three critical care environments (family/home-based care, hospital systems, and EMS/first responder systems) and their differential effects on CYSHCN/CMC populations
- Differentiate between routine emergency response protocols for CYSHCN/CMC families and comprehensive disaster preparedness strategies, identifying key planning modifications required for each scenario
- Evaluate evidence-based best practices for EMS personnel when responding to and interacting with CYSHCN/CMC during disaster situations
