Heather Austin, Licensed Pediatric Psychologist, Professor of Pediatrics, PPN Mental Health Lead at University of Alabama at Birmingham
Dr. Heather Austin is a licensed pediatric psychologist and Professor of Pediatrics in the the Division of Adolescent Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). She also serves as the PPN Mental Health lead at UAB/Children's of Alabama. She completed her doctoral degree in Clinical Child Psychology at Auburn University and her internship and post-doctoral fellowship in pediatric psychology at UAB. Dr. Austin is the psychologist and co-director for a nationally funded program through Maternal and Child Health called Leadership Education in Adolescent Health (LEAH). Within the UAB LEAH program, she focuses on interprofessional training and supervision with a focus on adolescent-centered/family involved care. As the PPN Mental Health lead for UAB/Children's of Alabama, she has worked with Dr. Mark Baker to implement PsySTART triage in the Emergency Department and to expand resources for Trauma Focused - Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) with the guidance of Dr. Chip Schreiber and Dr. Tona McGuire. Dr. Austin's areas of clinical and research interest include family centered behavioral lifestyle interventions for obesity, motivational interviewing, trauma-informed care, and adjustment and coping of children and adolescents with chronic health concerns.
