Dr. Phyllis Hendry is a tenured Professor of Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of Florida College of Medicine in Jacksonville with over 30 years’ experience as a board-certified pediatric emergency physician and board eligible EMS physician in an urban academic center and safety net hospital with a Level I trauma center and pediatric emergency medicine fellowship program. She completed her pediatric residency at Louisiana State University Medical Center in Shreveport followed by a pediatric emergency medicine fellowship at the University of Florida Health Science Center/Jacksonville. She served as Director of Pediatric Emergency Services at UF Health Jacksonville from 1993-2005. Since 2008, Dr. Hendry has been the Associate Chair for Emergency Medicine Research where she manages $10 million per year in federal, industry, and private foundation grants for adults and children focusing on EMS, trauma, pain management, pediatrics, clinical trials, child death, and biomarkers.
Dr. Hendry has been involved in state EMS leadership positions since 1999. She currently serves as the Florida EMS for Children Medical Director, HRSA EMSC State Partnership Program Director, Florida EMSC Advisory Committee chair, EMSC liaison to the Florida EMS Advisory Council, and TraumaOne Flight Services Pediatric Medical Director. In these roles she works closely with prehospital, hospital, disaster, and law enforcement professionals. In 2018, Dr. Hendry founded the FL PEDReady program and website to assist all EDs and EMS agencies in enhancing their pediatric readiness and disaster preparedness.
Dr. Hendry served as a founding medical director for the model pediatric hospice and palliative program, Community PedsCare, from 2005-2007. This led to her interest and research in pain management. In 2014, she founded the Pain Assessment and Management Initiative (PAMI) with the mission of advancing innovation and safety in pain education, patient care, and research to promote integrative and nonopioid pain management modalities.
Dr. Hendry has published over 130 peer reviewed publications, edited 4 books and 22 book chapters (including Advanced Pediatric Life Support and Pediatric Education for Prehospital Professionals textbooks), 100 invited abstracts, 170 invited international and national lectures, presentations and posters including national EMS and Pediatric meetings. Her awards include the 2015 Robert C. Nuss Research Scholar of the Year Award, 2017 UF Term Professorship Award, 2018-2021 University of Florida Research Foundation Professorship, 2019 UF INNOVATE Innovations of the Year Tech Licensing Favorites Award, 2020 UF Superior Accomplishment Award, and the 2021 Robert Wears Patient Safety Leadership Team Award for UF-Pain Assessment.
Dr. Hendry’s passions include rural, air, and pediatric EMS.
